Cheat codes in GTA games are entered during active gameplay — never from a pause or settings menu. The method varies slightly between platforms, but the process is straightforward once you know the rules. Follow the steps below for your platform and you’ll activate cheats reliably every time.
Entering Cheat Codes on PS5
PS5 uses a button-sequence system. You input a series of face and shoulder buttons in quick succession while playing — the game registers the sequence in the background without you needing to open any menu.
Load into an active game session
Cheats only register during live gameplay. They will not work from the main menu, a loading screen, or while paused. Get in-world first.
Find your cheat code
Browse the cheat codes list and select PS5 as your platform. Each card shows the full button sequence. Use the Copy button to paste it somewhere handy, or just memorise the sequence.
Enter the button sequence quickly
Press each button in order without long pauses. The game requires the full sequence to be entered faster than roughly one press per half-second. If it’s not registering, try again at a slightly faster pace.
Watch for the confirmation
A brief screen flash confirms activation. Some cheats also show a small text notification in the corner of the screen. No flash means the code wasn’t registered — try again.
Entering Cheat Codes on Xbox Series X
Xbox uses the exact same sequences as PS5 — just with different button labels. The pattern is identical; only the names change.
Follow the same four steps as PS5: load into gameplay, find your code, enter the sequence quickly, and look for the screen flash confirmation.
Entering Cheat Codes on PC
PC cheats work differently — they use text commands typed into the developer console, not button sequences. This method is more reliable and harder to mis-enter.
Load into an active game session
Same rule applies — you must be in active gameplay before the console will accept cheat commands.
Open the in-game console with the tilde (~) key
The tilde key is in the top-left corner of most keyboards, just below Escape. A text-input overlay will appear at the bottom of the screen.
Type the cheat command exactly
Enter the PC code shown on the cheat card — for example, TURTLE for Max Health or PAINKILLER for Invincibility. Commands are not case-sensitive. Press Enter to activate.
Close the console and check activation
Press tilde (~) again to close the console. The cheat should activate immediately — you’ll see a screen flash or status text confirming success.
Tips for Best Results
- Enter sequences at a steady pace. Both too fast and too slow can prevent registration. Aim for one button every quarter-second — quick but controlled.
- Make sure you’re not in a cutscene. Cheat codes are disabled during scripted sequences and in any menu. Exit to free-roam if codes aren’t working.
- Toggle cheats off when done. All toggle-style cheats (invincibility, moon gravity, slow motion) remain active until you re-enter the same code.
- Re-enter invincibility before it expires. The invincibility cheat lasts exactly 5 minutes. Re-enter the code with about 30 seconds left to avoid losing coverage mid-fight.
- The screen flash is your friend. If there’s no flash, the code didn’t register. Don’t assume it worked — always wait for confirmation.
Achievements & Trophies Warning
Activating any cheat code immediately disables PlayStation trophies and Xbox achievements for the entire play session. There is no way to re-enable them without reloading a save created before any cheat was used.
Best practice: Create a manual save on a dedicated slot before using any cheats. Label it “Pre-Cheat Clean Save.” When you’re done, load that slot and your trophies will work normally again.
Stacking Cheats Together
Most cheats can be active simultaneously. The following combinations are particularly entertaining:
- Chaos mode: Moon Gravity + Explosive Melee Attacks + Slippery Cars — vehicles fly everywhere at the slightest impact.
- God run: Invincibility + All Weapons + Remove Wanted Level — take on the whole city without consequence.
- Precision session: Slow Motion Aim + Explosive Ammo — every shot in bullet time with explosive payoff.
- Air superiority: Spawn Buzzard Helicopter + Invincibility + Explosive Ammo Rounds — the city is yours from above.
Note that some cheats override each other. Entering a different weather cheat will cancel the previous one.
A Brief History of GTA Cheat Codes
Rockstar has shipped cheat codes in every mainline GTA title. GTA Vice City in 2002 became iconic partly because of its ridiculous cheats — pedestrian riot mode, all vehicles explode, perfect handling. San Andreas went even further, letting players manipulate CJ’s stats, spawn jetpacks, and trigger pedestrian wars.
GTA 4 scaled back, offering phone-number cheats. GTA 5 returned to form with both methods. GTA 6 is confirmed to continue the tradition in its dual-protagonist Leonida setting.
